In 2017, Colt reintroduced the model with a robust steel frame, 6-shot capacity, 2-inch barrel, and interchangeable fiberglass sight. It is considered a reliable, precise weapon for self-defense, characterized by a smooth trigger pull, and should not be confused with the .357 Magnum King Cobra.  . The Cobra was made in calibers .38 Special, .38 Colt New Police, .32 Colt New Police, and .22 Long Rifle. It holds six cartridges and was sold by Colt from 1950 to 1981. In December 2016, it was announced that Colt would produce a new edition of the Colt Cobra with a steel frame and fiberglass sight. This model hit the market in early 2017. The Cobra was manufactured in three models: The first model (1950–1972) weighed 425 grams unloaded and had a 50 mm barrel. The improved second model (1973–1981) was recognizable by its concealed extractor, oversized wooden grips, and ramp sight in Baughman style, weighing 454 grams unloaded. The third version was introduced in 2017 in stainless steel and is designed for .38 +P Special cartridges. None of the Cobra models are approved for .38 +P+ Special cartridges.The Cobra has the same dimensions and configuration as the famous Colt Detective Special and uses the same "D" frame.
