Navy 1861, .36BP (Uberti license)The Great Western Arms Company, California, founded (GWA) was established in 1953 in Los Angeles to produce an American-made copy of the Colt Single Action Army revolver. Colt had discontinued this model in 1940. The Great Western revolver was sold through mail order in the 1950s and early 1960s and was used in many Western films and television shows. Between 1954 and 1964, Great Western produced about 22,000 revolvers and 3,300 Derringers. The single-action revolver from Great Western was largely identical to Colt's original version, except for some modern improvements. The 1851 Navy - like all other Colt models - was so popular that many companies did not simply wait for the Colt patent protection to expire in 1857, but instead copied Colt's products more or less faithfully. Sam Colt himself began the fight against these “counterfeits,” as he called them, as early as the end of 1850. On a poster, Colt had the cylinder engravings of the Dragoon, Pocket, and Navy models printed to show customers what to look for to ensure they were getting a real Colt and not a copy. When black powder shooting was rediscovered in the 1960s, the first replicas came onto the market. Countless small and micro businesses in Italy, Spain, and Belgium produced more or less faithful reproductions of the weapons from the American pioneer era, including the 1851 Navy. Many of these businesses soon went out of business or were displaced or absorbed by larger companies. Today, companies like Armi San Marco, Pietta, and Uberti in Italy, as well as Armi San Paolo in Spain, still manufacture the 1851 Navy.
