The commercial introduction of the “Double Action” revolvers to the American market only occurred after 1880; after it was found that sales had declined due to the double-action revolvers offered by Colt, specifically the Colt Model 1877 and 1878. Smith & Wesson began the market introduction with a smaller model in the calibers .38 and .32. The design was classically based on the Model No. 3, with the frame and barrel able to be tipped forward for loading, and the weapon had an external hammer like all models common at the time.
