This niche was then dominated by the extremely successful Mk I and Mk II pistol series from Sturm Ruger. The Smith & Wesson model 422 is a semi-automatic pistol in caliber .22lr. A unique design feature of the 422 was that the barrel was positioned low in the frame directly above the trigger guard. This made this pistol series perfect for use with a silencer with an aftermarket adapter, as the sights could still be used. The slide, which formed the upper rear part of the pistol, moved both behind and over the axis of the barrel and resembled an L-shape.
