Introduced in 1908 in the German Empire as the pistol 08, this service weapon was designed by the Austrian Georg Luger. The term "Parabellum" comes from the Latin saying Si vis pacem para bellum ("If you want peace, prepare for war"). Georg Luger was employed by the arms manufacturer Ludwig Loewe & Co. (later DWM). Based on the Borchardt semi-automatic pistol C93, he developed a pistol in caliber 7.65 mm Parabellum, which retained the underfolding knee joint lock but was significantly smaller, more manageable, more reliable, and generally more practical. This first series-produced Parabellum pistol appeared in 1900 and is now also referred to as the "old model." It had a flat breech head without a loading indicator, the closing spring was a leaf spring, the joint heads were asymmetrically milled and had a hook to prevent unwanted bending of the knee joint. The main characteristic of the weapons is the underfolding knee joint lock, which bends upwards when firing, instead of, as is usually the case, moving straight back. Therefore, the Parabellum pistol is very safe, as in the event of a massive malfunction, no parts can fly into the shooter's face. The long, tightly toleranced return of the fork piece and breech, as well as the front sight mounted directly on the barrel, ensure an extraordinarily high inherent precision of the weapon, compared to, for example, the Browning lock. However, the breech is sensitive to dirt and requires high manufacturing precision. The ammunition must also be matched to the weapon. An unsuitable or unzeroed cartridge type (depending on the manufacturer) can sometimes cause the casing not to be ejected after firing or cause an incomplete return of the breech to the starting position ("ammunition sensitivity"). The pistol 08 is one of the most produced handguns.
