In 1920, after World War I, Beretta launched the model 1920, developed by designer Tullio Marengoni, which was the company's first pistol in the 6.35 mm Browning caliber. With various evolutionary steps through models 1926, 1934, and 318, the model 418 finally appeared in 1937. The Beretta M418 is a compact Italian pocket pistol in 6.35 mm (.25 ACP). The earliest examples were produced between 1919 and 1922. There are several versions, including models 1920 (V1 and V2), 1926, 1926–31 (V1 and V2), 1934, 318, and 418. The 418 was the last model produced and was very successful. Although some considered it too weak for combat use, it was popular among high-ranking Italian officers during World War II. The German command in Rome procured examples; these can be identified by a "4UT" proof mark. The M418 remained in production until the mid-1950s and overlapped with the production of more sophisticated weapons that Beretta had developed in the meantime. The Beretta 418 became famous primarily as the weapon of Ian Fleming's James Bond, albeit rather infamously.
