In 1898, the weapon was standardized and introduced into the German Army, hence the name: G(ewehr) 98. Different manufacturers covered the armament needs. Ten years later, a new and shorter variant, the carbine, was produced, which was also intended for other tasks. It was a compromise between performance, portability, and handling.
