The timing of the development of cartridge revolvers proved to be favorable, as the Civil War, which broke out five years later, created a strong demand for "Smith & Wesson" products. The Smith & Wesson Model 19 is a revolver manufactured by Smith & Wesson, introduced in 1957 on a K-frame. Author and firearms experimenter Philip Sharpe is credited with its development in the 1930s. The Model 19 was made from blued carbon steel or nickel-plated steel with "combat grips" made of wood or rubber, an adjustable sight, full or half-moon hammer, serrated target trigger or combat trigger, and was available in 2.5" (3": Model 66 – rare), 4", or 6" barrel lengths. The Model 19 was manufactured from 1957 (first imprint of the model number) until November 1999. The Model 66 was produced from 1970 to 2005. The Model 66 differed by the use of stainless steel and its smooth target trigger.
