The designer was John Moses Browning. The frame design changed over time in three different series: Series one lasted from 1915 to 1941, Series two from 1947 to 1955, and Series three from 1955 to 1977. The Colt Woodsman was based on a design by John Moses Browning. Browning developed the Woodsman with a short slide, no grip safety, and no hammer. There are three series of the Colt Woodsman, and each series included three models: Target, Sport, and Match Target. The Target model was the base model and featured a 6" barrel with adjustable sights front and rear. The name "Woodsman" was only used starting in 1927. The Sport model was developed in 1933 as a field weapon for hiking and camping and had a 4.5-inch barrel. First Series 1915–1941The original versions of the first series had a fixed front sight, but in the second half of production, an adjustable sight became available. The Match Target model was introduced in 1938 and featured a heavier barrel with a one-piece wraparound grip known as the "elephant ear." A "Bullseye" symbol was engraved on the slide. Second Series 1948–1955Colt resumed production of the Woodsman in 1948. The three models remained the same but were built on a longer, heavier frame and featured a magazine safety, an automatic slide stop, and a magazine release at the rear of the trigger guard. Third Series 1955–1977Colt changed the design of the Woodsman in 1955. The three models remained the same, but the markings, grips, and sights were slightly altered.
