The Trooper and the high-end cartridge, the .357 Magnum, were introduced in 1953 by Colt's Manufacturing Company to target the market for medium-frame revolvers, as law enforcement officers had long complained about the weight of earlier models. In response, a completely new product line of revolvers called the MK III series debuted in 1969. The MK IIIs were intended to be the first major evolution of Colt's designs since the beginning of the 20th century. They utilized a new "J" frame and had no parts interchangeability with older models. The new revolvers employed a locking system with a transfer bar, allowing the revolver to fire only when the trigger was intentionally pulled fully back. The springs used in the MK III's internals were also an improvement. Unlike the older flat styles, they were coiled and made entirely of corrosion-resistant stainless steel. The .357 Magnum Trooper was the first offering of the new product line, featuring a heavy barrel with a solid top rib and a shroud that protected the ejector rod. 6-shot revolver with a 6-inch barrel.
