The pistol developed by Heinrich Ortgies around 1916 and produced by Deutsche Werke AG is truly the Glock of the 1920s, already during World War I. It was patented on September 12, 1916. The Browning Model 1910 from the Belgian arms manufacturer F.N. served as a model. In Erfurt, Heinrich Ortgies founded the company H. Ortgies & Co. in 1919 and produced about 15,000 pistols in the calibers of 6.35 mm Browning and 7.65 mm Browning until 1921. Due to strong demand that his small factory could not handle, Ortgies sold the patent and machines to the former Royal Prussian Rifle Factory Erfurt, which continued production as part of Deutsche Werke AG from 1921. The Ortgies pistol is assembled without screws and was a remarkable design in modern style for its time, being affordable and of good quality. It consists of few, high-quality parts and is well sealed against dirt. There are blued as well as matte or shiny nickel-plated versions. It has a fixed sight, and the grip panels are made of wood. As early as 1920, a caliber change from 7.65 to 9 mm was possible with an interchangeable barrel. The magazine was also usable for 7.65 mm and for 9 mm (k for short) cartridges. Production ban: Due to the possibility of conversion to caliber 9 mm (changing the pistol barrel), the Ortgies pistol became a prohibited weapon in the sense of the Treaty of Versailles. Production had to be stopped in 1923. However, at that time, it was issued to several German police departments, such as the Hamburg police, the water police, the Reich finance administration, the Berlin protection police, the city police of Winterthur, and the Prussian border protection.
