(Brand) break-action revolver, copy of Smith & Wesson Frontier, super rareThe company Garate, Anitua y Cia = GAC (Garate Anitua & Co.) was founded in 1892 in Eibar, Province of Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, Spain. They were originally manufacturers of firearms, particularly pistols. One of their most popular models was the "La Lira" in caliber 7.65, a copy of the Mannlicher. After World War I, the company began to look for new ideas and markets. Eulogio Garate Osoro, a great cycling fan, took over the firearms production and shifted it to bicycle manufacturing.Garate Anitua & Co 1915 .455 Webley caliber revolver. Approximately 30,000 of these revolvers were purchased by England during World War I due to a shortage of pistols for the army (see the book "Pistols of World War I" by Adamek).In 1872, Smith & Wesson developed a break-action revolver in calibers .44, .38 S&W, and .32, which were further developments of the Smith & Wesson No 3 and featured a double-action trigger. The commercial introduction of "Double Action" revolvers to the American market did not occur until after 1880; it was found that sales had declined due to the double-action revolvers offered by Colt, specifically the Colt Model 1877 and 1878. Smith & Wesson began the market introduction with a smaller model in calibers .38 and .32. The design was classically based on the Model No. 3, with the frame and barrel able to be tilted forward for loading, and the weapon had an external hammer like all models common at the time.
