The company was founded in 1852 by business partners Horace Smith and Daniel Baird Wesson under the name Smith & Wesson, Norwich, Connecticut.After the partnership began in 1852, Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson developed and patented a magazine pistol. The timing of the development of cartridge revolvers proved to be favorable, as the Civil War, which broke out five years later, created a strong demand for "Smith & Wesson" products. To reload, the cylinder was swung out. The Smith & Wesson Model K-38 Target Masterpiece Revolver Model 14 is a six-shot double-action revolver with adjustable open sights, built on the medium-sized "K" frame. It is designed for the .38 Special cartridge, and most were equipped with a 6-inch (150 mm) or 8 + 3/8 inch (210 mm) barrel. A small batch was produced with 4-inch barrels (100 mm), and even fewer were made with 5-inch barrels (130 mm). First manufactured in 1947 and originally known as the K-38 Target Masterpiece, it was renamed Model 14 in 1957 when all Smith & Wesson revolvers received numerical model numbers. It is based on the same medium-sized frame (K-frame) as the groundbreaking Smith & Wesson Model 10 ("Military and Police") revolver. The K-38 model was approved for use by the Los Angeles Police Department in the 1960s and early 1970s. Smith & Wesson also released a Model 14 in its "Classics" line. A nickel-plated version has since been discontinued, but the blued steel version is still available.
