Models were produced with a 7.5-inch and a 5.5-inch barrel. The Ruger Old Army revolver is unusual in that, unlike most percussion revolvers on the market, it was not based on a historical design but was a modification of Ruger's Blackhawk model, which in turn was based on the cartridge-firing Colt Peacemaker. Accordingly, the Old Army revolver features many modern design elements but uses an outdated black powder component load. This design is based on the Blackhawk but is styled after the Spiller-and-Burr cap and ball pistol. This is because the frame is longer at the front to accommodate the loading lever and the pivot pin. Earlier models were listed as caliber .44, later as .45, but all use round .457-inch balls or conical .454-inch projectiles made of pure lead.Unlike the Blackhawk, the Old Army did not utilize Ruger's transfer bar safety; instead, the revolver featured a series of safety notches between the individual chambers of the cylinder, as was the case with some models of Remington/Colt or other black powder revolvers from the mid-19th century.The revolver was tested fully loaded by charging each chamber with smokeless Bullseye powder and a lead ball and firing it.
