It was developed in 1854 by the French gunsmith Eugène Lefaucheux and offered various advantages over the percussion revolvers used at the time, which were still muzzle-loaders with paper cartridges. The Lefaucheux ignition had a peculiarity: the primer was activated by a small side-mounted pin. In contrast, the Lefaucheux pinfire revolver was a breech-loader and was loaded with metal cartridges. The French Navy introduced the revolver in 1858 as the world's first military sidearm using metal cartridges. Therefore, the revolver is also known by the designation Modèle 1858 or M1858. The revolvers were produced not only at Lefaucheux's factory in Paris but also in Saint-Étienne by the Société Manufacturière d’Armes and in other factories in Belgium. The most well-known manufacturer besides Lefaucheux was Auguste Francotte in Liège, Belgium. Many of the weapons manufactured for the civilian market featured a folding trigger. On the right side plate, there is a loading flap attached with a hinge, which can be opened to insert a cartridge into the cylinder. To load another cartridge, the cylinder must be rotated further. On the opposite side of the cylinder, right under the barrel, the extractor is attached.
