The HK4 is essentially a reissue and further development of the Mauser self-loading pistol HSc. It refers to the professional beginnings of the company's founders, who had been employees of the Mauser-Werke Oberndorf A.G. during the pre-war and wartime periods. Like the HSc, the HK4 is also an unlocked recoil loader with a spring-mass lock, single-action trigger, and a combined safety/decocking device. Despite this constructive continuity, the HK4 featured highly innovative detail solutions from the very beginning, allowing the young company H&K to compete with more established manufacturers. A standout feature of the HK4 is the ability to fire four calibers (hence HK "4") from one weapon by changing the barrel, recoil spring, and magazine (.22 lfB, 6.35 mm Browning, 7.65 mm Browning, 9 x 17 mm short). The switch between centerfire ammunition (6.35 mm Browning, 7.65 mm Browning, 9 mm short) and rimfire ammunition (.22 lfB) is made possible by a simple rotation of the (removable) base. The caliber change within the group of centerfire cartridges occurs in a few seconds without tools; when switching to caliber .22 lfB, only a screwdriver is needed to loosen the base. The customs authorities, in particular, chose the HK4 as a service weapon.
