After the end of World War II, a market segment remained initially overlooked at Walther. Until the end of the war, they had successfully manufactured pocket pistols for the civilian market. However, it was not until 1961 that small pistols for self-defense reappeared with the TP (Taschenpistole) and in 1969 with the TPH (Taschenpistole mit Hahn). The Walther TP was launched in 1961 and was produced until 1971 in calibers 6.35 mm Browning and .22 lfb. It technically follows the model of the pocket pistol Model 9, but is significantly larger and has a modified contour. The most obvious change is the relocation of the safety lever from the left grip side to the left slide side. Early models in 6.35 mm Browning bear the inscription on the left slide side: Model TP Cal. 6.35mm. The inscription on the right side reads: Carl Walther Waffenfabrik Ulm/Do. Typically, the TP and TPH have a deep black, glossy surface, which exhibits a purple sheen on some weapons. Later models, especially the late .22 pistols, have a more matte gray finish.
