Some information about it:
There isn’t a lot of information on this rifle and much of what we report comes from direct testimonies collected from the oldest workers at the Czechoslovak factory.
Before reaching this model, it’s worth noting that even before World War II and for many years, Czechoslovakia produced Mauser VZ-24 rifles in the city of Brno, using equipment supplied by Germany following the Treaty of Versailles in the 1920s.
When the Third Reich annexed Czechoslovakia in 1939, the Brno arsenals were assigned to the Nazi war industry and the VZ-24 rifles continued to be produced until 1943 as G24(t) for the German army.
Starting in 1943, the Brno arsenal took the name Waffen-Werke Brunn and began producing standard K98k rifles using, until 1944, the production code “dot” which was changed to “swp” in 1945.
After the war, the Brno factory, spared from bombings, was restarted by the Czechoslovak government and resumed producing K98k rifles by assembling thousands of finished parts left behind by the Germans, adopting the production codes “dot44” and “swp45”.
Post-war Czechoslovak production of the K98k grew rapidly and, besides meeting national demand, allowed export of the rifle to other countries (Denmark, GDR, Israel, etc.).
The East Germany (GDR) received the “last true Mauser K98k” stamped with the code “tgf” (Tcekoslovakeische Gewehr Fabrik – Czechoslovak Arms Factory) and the year (1950).
The rifle also bears the Czechoslovak stamp represented by the letter “T” inside a circle and crossed swords.
The exact number produced is unknown and the few collected details are still unverified, but we know that around the ’60s and ’70s some of these Mausers were transferred by the GDR to Iraq along with other weapons including Ak Mpi, so it’s likely some of these rifles bear Iraqi stamps.
