General safety instructions for handling handguns

- Read the instruction manual of your firearm first before handling or using the firearm.

- Follow the safety rules and always treat every firearm as loaded and ready to fire.

- Keep the firearm in a safe area. Use the safety and remove the magazine if applicable. Open the bolt and check the chamber. Remove ammunition if necessary.

- Before loading or using the firearm, check the barrel for foreign objects, e.g. lodged bullets, dirt, twigs, snow, water droplets.

- Load your firearm only immediately before use.

- Keep your firearm secured at all times. Only disengage the safety immediately before firing.

- Only fire if there is no danger to the surroundings and a proper backstop behind the target is present. Identify the target clearly.

- The danger zone of the bullet extends up to 5 km behind the target. Depending on the caliber size, the danger zone can be even further than 5 km.

- Only place your trigger finger on the trigger guard when you have the target in sight.

- Never hold or aim the firearm at an object you do not intend to shoot.

- Use only intact and undamaged ammunition from your specialist dealer or self-loaded ammunition that complies with regulations if you are a knowledgeable reloader.

- Firing damaged, unknown or incorrectly reloaded ammunition can cause serious to fatal injuries to persons or damage your firearms.

- Load the firearm only with the appropriate ammunition and caliber for which the firearm is marked and proofed.

- Ensure that no ricochets occur in the target area. These can be caused by hard, smooth surfaces or water surfaces.

- The ejection area of the firearm should always be kept clear, as bystanders can be injured by hot cartridge cases.

Before cleaning, always check the firearm’s status to ensure there is no ammunition in the chamber, magazine, or action.

Maintenance or cleaning may only be done on a fully unloaded firearm.

Do not handle the firearm by the muzzle.

Only hand over your firearm unloaded and only to persons who can handle it safely and confidently.
