Description

If used cases are to be cleaned first, a dedicated decapping die is the cleaner workflow: The Lee Precision Universal Decapping Die 90292 removes the used primer without simultaneously resizing the case. That’s exactly where its benefit lies – a clearly separated step before the actual die set is used.

Honest assessment
The 90292 is not a resizing die and not a complete die set. Lee explicitly describes it as a pure decapping solution: The case is not formed, only the primer is pushed out. According to the manufacturer, the cases do not need to be cleaned or lubricated beforehand. This makes the die especially interesting if you want to deprime cases before cleaning and keep dirt out of the later resizing process.
“Universal” here still does not mean “every case without checking.” This offer has a conservative upper limit of 0.550″ case diameter; the standard configuration is not recommended for .17–.20 calibers. These limits are more important for the purchase decision than a blanket resizing promise.

Fits well if …

you want to remove used primers from Boxer cases before cleaning without resizing at the same time;
you work on pistol and rifle cases within the specified size limits on a press with 7/8″-14 die thread;
you also have Boxer cases with crimped primers in your inventory;
you want a separate, robust decapping die instead of always doing this step with the resizing die of the respective set.

Fits less well if …

you want to work on Berdan-primed cases: Lee explicitly only approves the 90292 for Boxer cases;
you want to resize at the same time with this tool – the 90292 does not change case geometry;
your inventory is mostly in the .17–.20 range and you want to use the standard version unchanged;
your press does not have a standard 7/8″-14 die thread or no suitable shellholder for the respective case is available.

Purchase check: the crucial compatibility limits
Ignition system: Boxer-primed brass cases. Berdan is not approved.
Dimensions: A safe purchase limit here is a maximum 0.550″ case diameter (approx. 13.97 mm). The specific case must also be free and axially guided; in borderline cases, check dimensions and ignition system before purchase.
Small calibers: The standard configuration is not recommended for .17–.20. Lee offers an optional guided decapper for small calibers for the 90292. This is a targeted accessory solution – no reason to sell the standard die as .17-compatible across the board.
Press: The 90292 model is offered as a standard screw die with 7/8″-14 thread. A shellholder matching the case remains necessary and is not part of the universal function.

What it changes in practice
The practical advantage is less “more performance” than a clean process: Decapping can be separated from resizing. This way you can run dirty cases first through a dedicated universal die and only use the actual resizing dies later in the prepared condition. Because Lee explicitly requires neither cleaning nor lubrication before this step, the 90292 is exactly suited for this early stage of case preparation.
The decapper is held by a collet. According to Lee’s instructions, this is deliberately designed as a safety mechanism: If the decapper hits an obstacle and is overloaded, it can move upward instead of necessarily being damaged.

Limits and avoiding bad purchases

No resizing: If you are looking for a combined step of resizing and primer removal, a suitable resizing die is a better choice.

Boxer o
nly: The universality does not apply to Berdan systems.

.17–.20 not to be blindly planned: The standard version is not recommended for this; small diameters require a suitable optional guided decapper.

“Unbreakable” should not be confused with “unlimited force”: Lee itself describes the decapper climbing up under overload. Do not simply overcome unusual resistance with more force.

Shellholder remains case-specific: The die is universal, the case seating in the press is not.

User and Instructor Notes
Lee points out in the original manual that the die must be correctly adjusted to the shellholder in the press and the lock ring secured. Crucial for safe operation is especially the behavior under resistance: If the decapper slips upward through the collet, this is not a signal to “push through,” but a reason to check the case, primer pocket, and alignment. After a trigger, the decapper is repositioned and clamped according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
For frequent work with certain case groups, the optional Heavy Duty Guided Decappers can be useful. Lee explicitly describes their purpose as better centering of the case and lower risk of bending or damaging the decapper. Safety glasses and clean handling of residue from used primers are part of good workshop practice regardless.

Sensible Alternative Classification
If you want to calibrate directly anyway and do not want to deprime the cases consciously before cleaning, the decapping function of a suitable sizing die can save the extra step. The Lee 90292 is worthwhile especially if you organize decapping as a separate station. Within the 90292 platform, the guided Lee decappers are the more targeted addition for small or defined case groups; they do not replace the die but work together with it according to the manufacturer.

FAQ
Do cases need to be cleaned or lubricated before decapping? No. Lee explicitly states that neither prior cleaning nor lubrication is necessary for the 90292.
Does the 90292 size the case at the same time? No. According to Lee, the case is not sized at all; the die is exclusively intended for primer decapping.
Does the Universal Decapping Die work with Berdan cases? No. Lee explicitly specifies the die for Boxer-primed brass cases.
How large can the case be? For this offer, a conservative upper limit of 0.550″ case diameter applies. For borderline cases, also check length, free guidance, and ignition system before purchase.
Is the 90292 suitable for .17–.20? The standard configuration is not recommended for this. For small calibers, a suitable optional guided decapper is required; therefore, the die should not be generally considered a .17–.20 solution.
Can it decap crimped primers? Yes, with Boxer cases this is a vo
intended use. In case of unusually high resistance, do not simply apply more force; the Lee collet design is made to give way under overload.
What does it mean if the ejector slips upwards? According to Lee, this is a safety feature of the collet. Stop work, check the cause and alignment, and then reposition the ejector correctly according to the manufacturer's instructions.
