Hornady B234 Comparator Set
Compare bullets at the ogive instead of just the tip
Comparator body and seven inserts create reproducible base ogive references for common bullet diameters.
7 inserts included

Black-Raptor classification The B234 is a caliper comparison system: It helps assess differences in base ogive length when bullet tips vary geometrically. The values are relative system measurements and not a universal absolute cartridge length.

Does this fit your project?

Fits well if …
you want to compare seating depths using a reproducible ogive reference
you own a suitable caliper
your bullet diameters are covered by the included inserts

Less suitable if …
you want to measure case shoulder or headspace
you expect an absolute OAL without system reference
you expect calipers, OAL gauge, or modified cases in the set

What the product practically offers you

Ogive reference The insert contacts the bullet at a defined geometry and reduces the influence of uneven tips.

Seven sizes Common diameters from .224 up to larger caliber range are bundled in the Basic Set.

Comparison instead of estimate Measurement series become more meaningful when always using the same body, insert, and caliper.

Limits, disadvantages, and avoiding bad purchases
Comparator values are only directly comparable within the same measurement setup. Different inserts, calipers, or contact forces can shift the numerical value.
The set does not measure the case shoulder and does not replace a headspace gauge. For bullet diameters not included, an additional suitable insert is required.
Technical data with practical follow-up

Model Hornady Lock-N-Load Bullet Comparator Basic Set B234.

Measuring principle Base to ogive as a relative comparison length on the caliper.

Included inserts Seven sizes: .224, .243/6 mm, .257, .264/6.5 mm, .277, .284/7 mm as well as .308/7.62 mm and the specified 8-mm range.

Tool mount Comparator body for use with a suitable caliper.

Not included Caliper, OAL gauge, modified cases and Anvil Base.

Distinction Bullet Comparator, not Headspace Comparator.

Application and safety
Attach the comparator cleanly and flat on the caliper. Choose the insert matching the bullet, close the jaws with even force and repeat several measurements. Changes to seating depth only according to safe load data, sufficient clearance to lands/grooves and inspection of the finished cartridge.
Scope of delivery
1 × Hornady Bullet Comparator body plus 7 inserts of the Basic Set B234. Caliper, OAL gauge, modified cases, Anvil Base, ammunition and reloading components are not included.
Frequently asked questions
Does the set measure the overall length to the bullet tip? No. It provides a relative base-ogive measurement, reducing the influence of varying bullet tips. Is a caliper included? No. A suitable caliper is additionally required. Can I measure case headspace with it? No. A headspace comparator with designated inserts is required for that. Are the measurement values universally transferable? No. They are mainly comparable within the same combination of body, insert and caliper. What do I do with a different bullet diameter? Check if Hornady offers a suitable separate insert; do not force an insert that is too small or too large.
Clear purchase decision
Ideal for reloaders who want to compare seating depths cleanly over the ogive and own a caliper. It is the wrong tool for headspace or a universal absolute OAL.
