Shotgun Barrel Hones · Single Grits or Complete Set
BROWNELLS Professional Series Barrel Hones for the Lisle No. 2 Barrel-Honer
Aluminum oxide hones on a riveted steel carrier for controlled surface treatment of shotgun barrels. The key is not the coarsest grit, but the version that matches the barrel material, barrel condition, and the existing Lisle No. 2 system.

This family is aimed at experienced workshop users and gunsmiths who work on an already assessed barrel surface with a Lisle No. 2 Barrel-Honer. Four variants each provide a defined type of hone; the complete professional set bundles all the hone types named by Brownells for this series in a plastic box. Barrel cleaning and honing are two different tasks: hones remove material and are not part of routine maintenance without a clear diagnosis.

Check before purchase

Tool mount: The carriers are designed for the Lisle No. 2 Barrel Hone. Another hone is not a safe alternative without explicit approval.

Barrel material: The 150-grit version for chrome barrels is a separate variant. It must not be confused with the 150-grit standard hone g
equated.

Processing goal: 150, 400, and 500 denote different grits. The technically correct level depends on the actual surface condition and the manufacturer's specification.

Scope of delivery: Individual variants are repurchase options for an existing system. The Lisle No. 2 barrel hone is not confirmed as part of the individual packs.

Our assessment from a user and instructor perspective
The Professional Series makes sense when diagnosis, barrel material, and tool mounting are fixed. Then you can specifically repurchase exactly the worn grit or build an organized workshop selection with the complete set. For normal powder, plastic, or fouling deposits, suitable cleaning is initially the gentler choice. A shiny surface alone neither proves correct dimensions nor technical integrity.

Fits well if: You work with a Lisle No. 2 barrel hone, have properly assessed the shotgun barrel, and can clearly determine the required grit or the chrome barrel version.
Not ideal if: You only want to remove residues, barrel material or condition is unclear, or you are looking for a universal polishing solution without a matching hone.

Selecting variants correctly

500 grit honing stones for standard barrels: fine variant of the series; light brown stones.

400 grit honing stones for standard barrels: medium variant; cream-colored stones.

150 grit honing stones for standard barrels: coarser standard version; dark brown stones.

150 grit honing stones for chrome barrels: separate chrome barrel version; light yellow stones.

Complete professional honing stone set: according to Brownells, contains two stones each of the mentioned grits including the gray Lisle-2-S stones and is delivered in a plastic storage box.

Instructor/user tip: Before starting work, document barrel material, chosen stone type, and initial condition in writing. Then check in short, controlled intervals instead of continuing as long as possible by feel. An unexpected contact pattern, unusual noises, or damaged stones are reasons to stop and re-examine professionally.

Limits and safe use
The honing stones are described for shotgun barrels and the Lisle No. 2 barrel hone. Approval for other hones, other tool mounts, or arbitrary barrel types cannot be derived from this. Brownells mentions both chrome and carbon steel barrels but explicitly separates the 150 grit chrome barrel stones from the 150 grit standard variant. The processing cannot diagnose existing damage and guarantees neither a certain surface quality nor a functional or precision improvement.

Safety: Work only on a fully unloaded and clean shotgun, in a well-ventilated environment, and with safety glasses and suitable gloves. Check stones and holders before each use. Follow the hone's instructions, do not exceed its approved speed, and avoid excessive pressure. After honing, abrasive residues must be completely removed from the barrel.

Hone or clean?

For ordinary residues, start with appropriate shotgun barrel care. The Bore Tech Shotgun Blend barrel cleaner is intended for deposits in the shotgun barrel; a Bore Tech Alloy Shotgun Stix cleaning rod is part of the cleaning routine, not abrasive surface treatment. For mechanical care with caliber-appropriate felts, there is the VFG shotgun barrel cleaner Comfort. The guide for selecting a barrel cleaning system helps to mechanically combine cleaning components appropriately. Honing stones are only the right category when a professional assessment actually requires surface treatment.
You can find more suitable solutions in Cleaning & Workshop for shooting sports as well as in Cleaning & Workshop for hunting weapons. Safety glasses u
and suitable gloves are part of safe workshop work; the protective glasses collection offers a thematically matching selection for this.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do the honing stones fit every shotgun barrel hone? No. Brownells explicitly names the Lisle No. 2 Barrel Hone. Compatibility for other mounts is not confirmed.
Which variant do I need for a chrome barrel? Brownells offers a separate 150 variant for chrome barrels. The 150 standard version is not the same variant; check the actual barrel material before purchase.
Should I start with 150, 400 or 500? This cannot be answered generally. The correct grit depends on barrel material, condition, and work goal. Follow the hone’s instructions or expert assessment instead of automatically starting with the coarsest grit.
Is the Lisle No. 2 Barrel Hone included? For the single variants, only the respective honing stone package is confirmed. The barrel hone itself is not part of the confirmed scope of delivery. The complete Brownells offer is a honing stone set, not a blanket promise of a complete hone.
Does honing replace thorough barrel cleaning? No. Cleaning removes deposits; honing abrasively works the surface. For ordinary fouling, appropriate cleaning is the right first step.
Can honing safely remove rust pitting or other damage? A blanket promise would be unprofessional. Barrel condition, dimensions, and damage pattern must be professionally checked before material removal. If the condition is unclear, a gunsmith should decide.
How should the honing stones be stored after use? Clean and inspect the stones according to manufacturer instructions and store them dry. Damaged or heavily worn stones must not be reused; the complete set includes a plastic storage box for this purpose.
