Single-stage reloading press · Large frame for long cartridges
REDDING UltraMag: plenty of workspace and high leverage for controlled single steps
The UltraMag is aimed at reloaders who work with long or large-volume cartridges and want to maintain control at every step. Key purchase factors are a fixed bench spot, the required die thread, and whether precision work is more important than high throughput.
When full-length sizing long cases, seating long bullets, or heavy case work, space in the press window quickly becomes more important than additional stations. REDDING therefore combines a 4¾ inch frame opening with 4⅛ inch usable ram stroke and a compound lever linkage pivoted at the top of the frame.
Check before buying
Die thread: Standard dies with 7/8-14 fit the supplied steel adapter bushing. After removing it, the frame accepts 1¼-12 dies; for 1-14 the separately available REDDING 70030 bushing is required.
Operation: The UltraMag is a single-stage press. Those who want to keep several dies set up permanently or achieve high output are better served with a turret or progressive press.
Mounting:
Vier mounting holes require a torsion-resistant workbench and a sturdy bolting. Before purchase, plan space for the frame, lever travel, and secure case access.
Scope of delivery: This offer includes the single press, no caliber-specific kit. Choose die set and case holder separately according to the load data.
Our assessment from user and instructor perspective
The great strength of the UltraMag is not speed, but reserve: plenty of working space, a long leverage ratio, and a massive cast iron frame. This makes it especially interesting when a normal press offers little hand clearance with long cartridges. At the same time, this power is a reason not to operate the press carelessly: misalignment of case, case holder, or die must be detected before applying force.
Fits well if: long magnum or large caliber cartridges, power-intensive case work, and controlled single-stage processes are the focus.
Not ideal if: you want to produce many cartridges per hour, work frequently mobile, or use multiple dies without retooling.
What really counts in use
4¾-inch frame opening: More hand room when inserting long cases and bullets; still, the specific cartridge and die length is decisive.
4⅛-inch ram stroke: Designed for a long working path with large cartridges and demanding forming or sizing operations.
Top-hinged lever ratio: Transfers force through the upper frame and, according to the manufacturer, reduces typical concerns about frame twisting and misalignment.
Hollow ram with hose: Spent primers fall through the ram into a flexible collection hose; this facilitates a clean reloading area.
Smart Primer Arm: Large and small primers are supported by interchangeable arm assemblies; the seating movement occurs at the end of the ram stroke.
Instructor/user tip: Set up the press first without primer components. Check mounting, free lever travel, case holder fit, and die alignment with low force. Only when the stroke runs smoothly is the working process gradually built up and documented.
Limits, compatibility, and safe use
The press accepts 7/8-14 dies with adapter and 1¼-12 dies without adapter. The optional 1-14 bushing is not included in the confirmed scope of delivery. The press does not replace caliber-specific dies or case holders and alone does not guarantee precise loading; measuring tools, process control, and data from reliable load data sources remain necessary.
Important note: Mount the press firmly on a sturdy workbench according to the instructions. Keep ram and pivot points clean and lubricate lightly or regularly with suitable oil. Handle primers and other reloading components exclusively according to their own manufacturer instructions.
Comparison and sensible alternatives
Compared to a turret press, the UltraMag focuses more on a single, powerful working step but requires die changes or multiple presses. For general accessories and measuring tools, the reloading accessories collection offers suitable additions. Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the UltraMag especially suitable for? For reloaders with long or large-volume cartridges, demanding case work, and a solid workbench. For high quantities, a turret or progressive press is usually more suitable.
Do standard 7/8-14 dies fit? Yes. The included steel adapter bushing accepts standard dies with 7/8-14 threads.
Can I use 1¼-12 dies? Yes. After removing the 7/8-14 adapter bushing, the frame accepts 1¼-12 dies.
Is the 1-14 adapter bushing included? No. REDDING explicitly lists the 70030 bushing for 1-14 dies as optional accessory.
Are dies and case holder included? This offer includes the single press. Caliber-specific kits are offered separately by REDDING; plan separately for dies and case holder for this offer.
How are spent primers collected? They fall through the hollow ram into a flexible plastic hose, which can be emptied or led to a collection container.
Why isn’t the press the best choice for every reloader? It is large, bench-mounted, and designed for powerful single-stage work. Those who mainly want throughput, quick die changes, or mobility otherwise pay for reserves they hardly use.
