American Defense Manufacturing · Buying Guide
Choose QD and Picatinny interface according to actual use
American Defense Manufacturing AD-170-VPG 5-Lug Picatinny Riser Mount with Standard Lever, black is not only categorized here by features: Fit, variant, and the practical result for your setup are decisive.
Check fit first
Does the product fit your setup?
Fits well if scope or Harris-type bipod, Picatinny rail, height, and lever position match exactly.
Fits less well if device base, rail standard, or desired optical axis height are not clearly defined.
Purchase check before ordering Device interface, Picatinny profile, height, lever variant, position, and clearance. Check the chosen variant against the designation on the existing system and the manufacturer’s documentation.
More height is only helpful if it solves a specific space or contact problem. With a scope that has its own quick-release lever, too low a riser can even cause the lever not to operate freely.
The AD-170-VP
G therefore adds a second Picatinny rail above the existing rail. In the version offered here, five slots are available; the riser raises by 0.60 inches and can be quickly removed via the ADM standard lever. It is a complete Picatinny-on-Picatinny mount, not the single AD-170 base and not the optic itself.
Crucial before purchase: A suitable Picatinny rail is required below. On top, the device to be mounted needs its own Picatinny clamp and enough space for its lever. Five slots must be sufficient for its clamping surface and the desired position.
What the 0.60-inch raise practically changes
The additional height creates clearance over handguards, controls, or an underlying rail. It can also allow a more upright head position. Whether this actually fits better depends on the sight line, cheek rest, and the device used. The riser does not replace a suitable cheek rest and does not correct an unsuitable optic position.
ADM points out on the product page that many optics and magnifiers with built-in QD levers require the 0.60-inch version because the lower variant does not provide enough space for the clamping mechanism. This is a selection aid but not a blanket approval for every device. Clamping surface, slot requirements, and lever travel must be checked for the specific setup.
Five slots instead of a long bridge rail
The total length of 2.3 inches keeps the raised rail section compact. This fits single optics or accessories whose entire clamping fits within these five slots. For a combination of sight and magnifier or for widely spaced mounting points, a longer riser rail may be the more honest choice.
The riser must not be used to bridge separate, movable components. Both clamping points of the riser must be on the same load-bearing base rail. Likewise, the upper device must fully clamp on the raised Picatinny surface; a partially floating or forced fit is not a viable solution.
Setting the QD Auto Lock correctly
To open, press the locking button and move the lever 180 degrees to the open position. Then place the riser on the desired slot and close the lever. The clamping should be play-free, but the lever must fully close with controlled firm hand pressure. Force is no substitute for correct adjustment.
If the tension is incorrect, the lever remains open. If pressed toward the base, the adjustment nut protrudes on the opposite side. ADM recommends corrections of one to two faces of the eight-sided nut and rechecking after each step. Fingers or a flat screwdriver are sufficient; no proprietary tool is required.
The adjustability compensates for rail manufacturing tolerances. It does not make a damaged, dirty, or incorrect rail compatible. Contact surfaces and slots must be clean and undamaged. After switching to another base rail, the tension is checked again.
Our assessment
The strongest reason to buy is the combination of a compact 5-slot riser and a tool-free adjustable QD clamp on the base rail. This makes sense if a Picatinny optic is regularly removed or its own lever requires additional clearance.
The most common misconception concerns compatibility: Picatinny on both sides does not mean every device fits sensibly on five slots. Those who mount only a single optic permanently often ride lower and with one less interface using a device-specific direct mount. Those who want to raise several devices in a row may need a longer riser rail.
Instructor tip: Check stop height before zeroing Mount optic
and riser initially, without immediately zeroing the final sight line. Take a natural shooting position repeatedly: If the eye finds the reticle without consciously raising the head, the height is probably right. If the cheek has to leave the stock, the setup is too high or requires a suitable cheek rest.
User tip: Treat lever travel as a separate measure
Check not only if the optic fits the five slots. Also fully open its own clamping lever. If it collides with the ADM lever, the housing, or adjacent accessories, the position must be changed or a different mount chosen.
User tip: Always use the same slot
Mark the used base rail slot for repeated removal and place the riser against the same slot flank before closing. After remounting an optic, a point-of-impact check is part of the process; the QD function does not replace this check.
User tip: Rail change means tension check
A once found lever setting applies to the specific base rail. When switching to another weapon or rail, start open, check play, and adjust the nut in small steps if necessary.
Black-Raptor short summary:
Buy if: five slots are sufficient, 0.60 inch additional height is needed, and the upper device with its own Picatinny clamping is regularly loosened.
Don’t buy if: a low or tall version, a long rail bridge, a device-specific direct mount, or an optic including mount is expected.
Matching products by system logic:
AD-170 base for a modular planned ADM setup instead of a finished Picatinny riser
Aimpoint Micro direct mount if no elevated 5-slot intermediate level is needed

FAQ
Is this only the AD-170 base? No. The AD-170-VPG-5LUG-STD is the complete QD riser with an elevated Picatinny top and five slots. The single AD-170 base is a different product.
How much does the riser raise the optic? The offered standard height raises the upper rail surface by 0.60 inch or about 15.2 mm. This is not the 0.50-inch low or the 1.20-inch tall version.
Does every Picatinny optic fit on the riser? No. The device needs its own Picatinny clamping, its clamping surface must fit five slots, and all levers must be able to open and close freely.
Do I need tools for the QD lever? No special tools. ADM describes the adjustment with fingers or a flat screwdriver. The nut is adjusted in small steps and then checked again on the rail.
When is a direct mount better? If a single, clearly defined optic should sit permanently and as low as possible, a suitable direct mount reduces height and number of interfaces.
Can I mount sight and magnifier together on it? Only if both clamping surfaces fully fit within the five slots
