When it comes to pin, fitting, and assembly work, the striking surface often matters more than extra force. The Real Avid Armorer’s Master Hammer AVARMHAM combines a forged hammer with a full tang, five material-specific striking options, and a magnetic pin starter stored in the handle.
Five striking options: steel, brass, nylon, rubber, and a removable soft-blow cover.
Head change on the job: interchangeable heads with integrated storage on the tool.
Controlled pin placement: the removable magnetic stainless steel starter is stored in the handle.
Workshop construction: forged hammer body with full tang.
Clear boundary: punches, workpiece supports, and safety glasses are not included with this single hammer.
Choose the contact surface first, then strike
AVARMHAM isn’t a hammer meant to do every job with the same surface. The interchangeable heads change the contact with the workpiece. Steel is the hard option for robust, suitable opposing surfaces. Brass is softer than steel and reduces the risk of hard steel marks when used properly but can still leave abrasion or pressure marks. Nylon, rubber, and the soft-blow cover are intended for increasingly surface-friendly contact tasks but don’t replace proper support or checking the specific material.
Steel
For robust metal work with a suitable punch or counterpart. Do not strike directly on finish, delicate edges, or brittle parts.
Brass
Softer metal surface for controlled workshop work. Not guaranteed to be mark-free; keep the surface clean and test first on an uncritical spot.
Nylon
For lighter correction and setting tasks when a hard metal surface is unnecessary. Don’t compensate for tight pins with more force.
Rubber
For dampened contact when aligning or setting suitable assemblies. Not intended for driving out tight pins.
Soft-Blow Cover
Removable cover for the softest possible surface contact. It doesn’t make an unsuitable support or wrong striking direction safe.
Material boundary: “Softer” doesn’t mean “mark-free.” Bluing, coatings, aluminum, polymer, and hardened pins react differently. When in doubt, protect the part surface, use suitable support, and start with the softest working option.
What the magnetic pin starter can do – and what it can’t
The removable stainless steel starter is stored in the handle and magnetically holds a small pin at first placement. This makes straight alignment easier before fingers are moved out of the striking area. According to the current Real Avid catalog, the starter covers pins from 1/16 to 7/32 inch. However, it does not replace a
dimensionally matching punches: Once the pin is securely guided, the correct standard, roll pin, or starter punch takes over the further work.
For a complete pin working chain, hammer, correct punch, and a stable workpiece support belong together. The Real Avid Accu-Punch Master Set is the broader punch complement. Those who only work with standard pins can compare the more compact Accu-Punch Standard Driver Set.
Workflow without unnecessary component stress
Unload the firearm completely, remove the magazine, check the cartridge chamber, and remove ammunition from the work area. Support the part to be removed stably and close to the work area; the pin needs a free exit path.
Determine pin type, diameter, direction of movement, and component surface. Choose the matching punch and the softest still functional striking option.
Fully attach the interchangeable head until the lock engages. Check by gently pulling if it sits securely. Do not use damaged, loose, or chipped heads.
If necessary, use the magnetic starter only for straight positioning. Then keep hands out of the striking line and work with short, straight strikes.
If resistance suddenly increases or the pin shifts crookedly, stop. Check support, direction, pin type, and punch instead of increasing striking energy.
Suitable – and deliberately not suitable
Suitable for: gunsmiths, armorers, ambitious workshop users, and shooters who regularly switch between robust metalwork, controlled setting work, and more surface-friendly contacts.
Not suitable for: users expecting a complete punch set, only needing a single rubber hammer, wanting to work without a workpiece support, or looking for a guaranteed mark-free universal surface for every firearm material. AVARMHAM is explicitly not a punch or bench block set.
Buy if – don’t buy if
Buy if: you repeatedly need different contact surfaces at a workbench, want to store interchangeable heads on the tool, and actually use the magnetic starter for small pins.
Don’t buy if: you only use a single striking surface, already have a matched hammer/punch system, or are looking for a complete set with punches and bench block. This item is the hammer, not the complete pin working station.
Three concrete workshop tips
Trainer tip – make four decisions before the first strike: Lay out component surface, pin type, punch, and striking surface visibly side by side. Try support and exit path initially without striking. Those who decide these four points in advance recognize a wrong combination before force reaches the component.
User tip – actively check the lock every time: After each head change, push the head until it clicks in and then pull back slightly. A head that is only slipped on must not be “fully mounted” by the first strike.
User tip – hand over the starter in time: Use the magnetic starter only as long as the pin is straight and securely guided. Then switch to the punch matching the pin. This prevents the starter from jamming or being misused as a substitute for a robust driver tool.

Our assessment
The usefulness lies not in maximum striking power, but in the controlled selection of the contact surface. The full tang and forged body form the durable base; interchangeable heads, integrated storage and pin starter save handling during mixed workshop tasks. Those who only need one type of strike pay for flexibility they don’t use. Those who regularly set pins, align assemblies and switch between more delicate and robust contact surfaces get a logically designed hammer system.
FAQ
Which striking surfaces are included with the Real Avid AVARMHAM? Steel, brass, nylon and rubber, plus a removable soft-blow cover. The choice depends on the workpiece surface, opposing tool and required striking hardness.
Are punches or a bench block included? No. The item is a single hammer system with interchangeable heads and pin starter. Suitable punches, workpiece support and safety glasses must be provided separately.
What is the magnetic pin starter for? It holds small pins when first positioning them straight. Once the pin is guided, switch to a dimensionally and typologically matching punch.
Is the brass head guaranteed to be mark-free? No. Brass is softer than steel and can reduce the risk of hard steel marks, but abrasion or pressure marks are still possible. Surface, support and striking energy remain decisive.
How is an interchangeable head securely mounted? Align the head and push it fully on until the lock audibly or tactilely engages. Then check by gently pulling. Do not use loose or damaged heads.
Why is there no weight listed in the technical data? The currently available Real Avid documents list both 20 and 22 oz for the AVARMHAM. Until this contradiction is clearly resolved, we avoid a seemingly precise weight specification.
