Vortex · Flip Caps · Optic Protection
Vortex Defender Flip Cap: Choose protective caps based on the actual outside diameter Defender Flip Caps protect the objective lens or eyepiece from dust, rain, fingerprints, and light impacts, without the need to store loose caps separately.
The most important thing when buying: Don’t guess based on the objective lens designation. What matters is the measured outside diameter where the cap sits.
Our honest assessment
A good flip cap isn’t an optical upgrade; it protects sensitive, often expensive optics. The Defender series is especially useful if you regularly transport your optic, carry it in the field, or protect it on the range between shooting sessions.
The most common buying mistake is choosing the wrong size. A 50 mm objective lens doesn’t automatically mean the “50” version will fit. The housing’s outside diameter is what matters.
A good fit if … … you’re looking for a sturdy protective cap that stays attached to your optic.
… you can accurately measure the outside diameter.
… your optic is regularly exposed to weather, transport, and contact with gear.
Probably not a good fit if … … you want to order based only on the objective lens number.
… you expect a universally stretchable cap for different optics.
… your mount or another accessory blocks the cap’s opening path.
Options and fit ranges
Eyepiece E-10 For an outside diameter of about 40–46 mm. The eyepiece version can be used in several open positions.
O-24 / O-32 O-24: approx. 28.25–
31.25 mm. O-32: approx. 38–41 mm outer diameter.
O-40 / O-44 O-40: approx. 45.5–48.5 mm. O-44: approx. 48–53 mm outer diameter.
O-50 / O-56 O-50: approx. 55–59 mm. O-56: approx. 62–66 mm outer diameter.
Limitations, drawbacks, and how to avoid buying the wrong size
Measure before ordering. A caliper is ideal. Measure where the cap will sit—not the exposed lens opening.
It must not be so tight that you have to force it on; if it’s too loose, the cap may slip. Also check whether the open cap will interfere with the mount, bolt, magnification ring, or transport setup.
Technical specs with practical notes
Variants 24, 32, 40, 44, 50, 56, and eyepiece.
Function Folding protection for the objective or eyepiece side that stays on the scope.
Choosing a size Based on the measured outer diameter, not the objective lens size.
Practical limitation A flip cap protects your scope during transport and use, but doesn’t replace a padded transport case.
What’s included

FAQ
What size do I need? Measure the outer diameter at the objective or eyepiece and match it to the range for the appropriate variant. Can I order based on a “50 mm scope”? Not reliably. 50 mm usually refers to the clear objective lens size, not the outer diameter of the housing. Is the eyepiece version identical to the objective caps? No. It’s designed for the eyepiece side and has its own fit range. Does the cap protect against rain? It protects the covered optical surface from direct rain and dirt, but doesn’t make the entire scope waterproof.
Black Raptor · Avoid buying the wrong size
Defender Flip Caps work well when you get the size right. Measure first, then choose a variant—that matters more than any model name in the product title.
