Cast Iron · Waffles · Fire Kitchen
Petromax Waffle Iron: classic waffles made from solid cast iron The Petromax waffle iron brings a heavy cast iron baking mold to campfires, grills, and according to the current product data also to the stove. The pre-treated surface is supposed to make getting started easier.
The decisive point for purchase: Cast iron needs preheating time, care, and controlled heat. If you’re looking for a lightweight, fast-reacting camping waffle iron, don’t buy just for nostalgia.

Our honest assessment

The advantage of cast iron is heat retention: If the embers fluctuate briefly, the baking surface doesn’t immediately fall out of the temperature range. This can make baking more even.
The disadvantage is the same property in reverse. If the iron gets too hot, it takes time for the temperature to drop again. Patience and ember control are more important than maximum flame.

Works well if … … you want to bake consciously over embers or grill and cast iron care is no problem for you. … sweet and savory waffles are to become part of your camp kitchen.

Less suitable if … … you pack ultralight, expect immediate temperature response, or don’t want to dry and lightly oil after cleaning.

Features and practical effect

Solid cast iron Retains heat for a long time and distributes it more evenly than very thin baking molds.

Long handles Create distance from the hot baking mold; heat protection gloves are still advisable.

Pre-treated surface According to the available data, the iron is already pre-treated. The patina still benefits from proper care.

Sweet or savory The mold is not limited to dessert batter; what matters is a bakeable batter and controlled temperature.

Limits, disadvantages, and avoiding bad purchases
The baking pan gets very hot and stays hot for a long time. Open flames can quickly overheat the outside, while the batter bakes unevenly. Cast iron is heavy and not dishwasher-friendly.
Before buying: Check if your cooking spot is stable enough and if the size and weight of a solid cast iron pan fit your setup.

Why does batter stick? Typical causes are insufficient preheating, unsuitable batter, too little fat, or damaged patina.
Black Raptor · honestly rated
The Petromax waffle iron is not lightweight but genuine cast iron cookware. Those who master the heat and care for the patina get a robust tool for waffles over fire. It is less suitable for fast, ultra-light tours.
