EDC · Outdoor · Folder
Buck 811 Trace Ops: lightweight flipper with Tanto blade A compact folder for everyday cutting and gear tasks: Tanto blade, linerlock, flipper, and skeletonised aluminium handle offer quick handling with moderate weight.
Important: The Trace Ops is a folding knife, not a lever tool. If you need maximum stability for tough fieldwork, a fixed blade is a better choice.

Our honest assessment
The strength of the 811 lies in its weight, slim design, and direct operation. The Tanto geometry provides a robust tip and distinct cutting sections but is less versatile than a classic drop-point shape. 7Cr17MoV is low-maintenance and suitable for everyday use but does not belong to the premium steel class.

Works well if … … you want a lightweight folder for packaging, cord, cardboard, and normal outdoor tasks.
… you like flipper, clip, and Tanto geometry.

Less suitable if … … you expect premium edge retention or a fixed working blade.
… legally uncritical carry is your main criterion; design and local laws must be checked separately.

Features and benefits

Tanto blade Robust tip and two clearly separated cutting areas. Good for defined push and pull cuts but less belly than drop point.

Ball-bearing flipper Enables smooth manual opening. Dirt and lint in the joint area should be cleaned regularly.

Linerlock Holds the blade open while cutting. Lock fully
check.

Aluminium handle Light and dimensionally stable; it may feel less grippy than G10 or rubber in cold or wet conditions.

Limits, disadvantages and avoiding bad purchases

Not a fixed blade: Joint and locking mechanism impose limits under heavy stress.
Not premium steel: 7Cr17MoV is low maintenance but requires more frequent sharpening.
Check legalities: One-handed opening and locking may be relevant depending on country and situation. Check applicable regulations before carrying.

FAQ
Is the Tanto blade more versatile than Drop Point? No. It offers a robust tip and clear edges, is good for many tasks, but less all-round flexible than a pronounced Drop Point geometry. Is 7Cr17MoV a premium steel? No. It is a low-maintenance rust-resistant utility steel with less edge retention than modern premium steels. Is the knife intended for heavy bushcraft work? Rather not. For heavy stress and dirty continuous work, a fixed blade is the more suitable tool class. What should I check before buying? Steel choice, Tanto geometry, handle feel, clip/carry concept, and the regulations applicable to your use.
Black Raptor · honestly assessed
The Buck 811 Trace Ops is a lightweight, modern folder for normal cutting tasks. Quick to operate and easy to carry – but deliberately not a replacement for a fixed working blade and not a high-end steel model.
