Vector Optics Hugo · SCOM-31
The rest is set, the target is at 100 meters – and instead of choosing between pure close range and unnecessarily high magnification, you have a useful all-round range with 3–12×.
The Hugo 3-12x44 GT combines an illuminated SFP-BDC reticle with side focus from 10 yards, lockable 1/4-MOA turrets, and a slim 25.4-mm tube. This is interesting for range, HFT, and selected hunting applications – when reticle, mount, and engagement distance really match.
Check if the Hugo fits your setup
Our honest assessment
The SCOM-31 is neither a modern FFP range scope nor a dedicated premium twilight scope. Its strength lies in a down-to-earth 3–12× concept: 3× still allows enough
Environment for many medium distances, 12× brings detail for targets, small objects, and controlled shots from a stable position.
The crucial point is the VOI-10BDC reticle in the second image plane. The reticle stays visually the same size when zooming; its holdover marks are calibrated at 10× according to the manufacturer. If you use the BDC marks at a different magnification, you need to know and practically verify their changed angular values.
The 25.4 mm design and 620 g net weight are comparatively classic. For that, don’t expect a 30 mm mount, FFP comfort, or a high protection class: IPX4 means protection against splashing water, not submersion.
Fits well if …
you’re looking for a variable scope for the shooting range, HFT, or calm hunting situations,
you need side focus starting at 10 yards for short to medium distances,
you work with 1/4-MOA clicks and consciously use an SFP-BDC reticle at 10×,
a 25.4 mm mount fits your firearm, rail, and desired build height.
Fits less if …
you want to use holdover marks across the entire zoom range without conversion,
you’re looking for a particularly fast scope for driven hunts or dynamic close range,
you expect uncompromising low-light performance, ED glass, or documented premium transmission,
you need a 30 mm system or higher water resistance.
What the features change in practice
3–12× and 44 mm objective
The fourfold zoom range is more versatile than a pure high-magnification scope. 3× eases orientation and target acquisition; 12× helps with small hit zones. At 12×, the field of view narrows significantly to 2.6 m at 100 m, making every movement more visible.
SFP-BDC at 10×
The VOI-10BDC stays the same size when zooming. The BDC references are designed for 10× according to the manufacturer. Bullet, velocity, sight height, weather, and actual distance still affect the point of impact – the scale does not replace a confirmed ballistic table.
Side focus 10 yd to ∞
The early parallax range is practical for short training distances and HFT. It not only sharpens the image: at the respective target distance, a clean parallax adjustment helps reduce position-dependent point-of-impact errors caused by a non-centered eye position.
1/4 MOA, zero reset, and turret lock
One click corresponds to about 7.3 mm at 100 m. The turrets can be reset to zero after sighting in and locked. The adjustment range is 60 MOA each.
100–105 mm eye relief
The long eye relief allows room for a secure hold. Still, the mounting position in your real shooting posture is decisive: the full field of view must be visible on the stock without leaning forward or backward.
FMC, IPX4, and nitrogen filling
Fully multi-coated lenses and nitrogen filling aim for a clear image and less internal fogging. IPX4 protects against splashing water; this protection class is not intended for permanently wet use or submersion.
Sensibly derived from user reports
At OpticsPlanet, clearly assigned SCOM-31 buyer reports describe a clear image for the price, tactile adjustment clicks, and in one case, a held zero after about 200 shots. Another verified buyer points out that the shop images at the time did not correctly represent the actual reticle.
Our conclusion: Don’t decide based on any random product image. Check the current VOI-10BDC reticle drawing from the manufacturer and confirm zero and hold points with your specific firearm-ammunition combination. Individual experience reports are helpful but do not replace a reliable long-term test.
Setup: first reticle, then parallax, then zero
1. Diopter: Adjust the bl
ick briefly on a bright, textureless background and focus the reticle at the eyepiece. Don’t stare for minutes – the eye otherwise unconsciously compensates for blur.
2. Eye relief and alignment: Position the scope at maximum magnification in your normal shooting position so that the full field of view is visible without shadows. Align the reticle vertically.
3. Parallax: Set the side focus to the target distance and check by slightly moving your eye whether the reticle and target shift against each other. Only then proceed with fine adjustment.
4. Zeroing: Use a stable rest, shoot groups instead of single shots, and calculate in MOA. At 100 m, 4 clicks are approximately 2.91 cm. After confirming zero, you can reset and lock the scales.
Which Hugo alternative makes more sense?
SCOM-30 Hugo 3-12x44
The simpler choice with the same 3–12×44 base range, VOW-10BDC and 1/4-MOA adjustment, but without illumination. Useful if you don’t need the illuminated center and want to keep weight and price lower.
SCOM-44 Hugo 3-12x40i Fiber
The alternative for a clearly visible fiber center and a MIL system. It works with VHU-3-MIL reticle and 0.1-MIL clicks. Choose it if your training and target sheets are consistently metric/MIL.
SCOL-30 Hugo 4-16x44 GT
More detail reserve through 4–16×, but less overview at the lower end. It suits smaller targets and stable shooting positions rather than situations where 3× is already important.

Important: A CR2032 is not listed in the documented scope of delivery. Plan to get one separately and check the actual package contents before mounting.
Mounting, safety and care
Mount and check only on a fully unloaded firearm; observe safe direction and manufacturer rules.
The supplied rings are specified for 25.4-mm tubes and a Weaver interface. Check rail, height, objective clearance and recoil resistance for your specific system.
Tighten screws evenly and only according to the torque specifications of firearm, rail and ring manufacturer. An overtightened tube can be damaged.
After mounting, transport or shock, shoot a control group. Turret Lock prevents accidental turning but does not guarantee unchanged zero.
Blow off dust first or loosen with a soft brush; then clean from inside to outside with a clean optic cloth
clean. Do not drag punches dry over the coating.
IPX4 is splash water protection. Dry externally after moisture, close covers only when the optics are dry, and do not submerge the glass.
FAQ about the SCOM-31
Is the VOI-10BDC reticle correct at every magnification?
No. It is in the second focal plane and is calibrated by the manufacturer at 10×. At other magnifications, the angular values of the hold marks change. Additionally, the actual point of impact must be confirmed with weapon, ammunition, sight height, and environmental influences.
Does the scope work with MIL or MOA?
The SCOM-31 adjusts in 1/4 MOA increments and offers 60 MOA elevation and windage travel each.
Do existing 30 mm rings fit?
No. The tube has 25.4 mm or 1 inch diameter. Suitable rings are included according to the manufacturer, but their interface and height must fit your rail and weapon.
Is the glass suitable for very short distances?
The side focus starts at 10 yards, supporting short training and HFT distances. However, the lowest magnification is 3×; for very dynamic close range, a true 1× system is faster.
How waterproof is the Hugo?
The manufacturer states IPX4. This means protection against splashing water from various directions, but no approval for submersion.
How is the illumination powered?
The red center dot is powered by a CR2032. Brightness is adjustable; check the suitable level under your real lighting conditions and keep a spare battery ready.
Is a CR2032 included in the delivery?
A CR2032 is not listed in the documented delivery contents. Therefore, plan to get one separately and check the actual package contents before mounting.
