Eyepiece protection for Continental scopes
The cover stays on the optic – and the eyepiece lens protected
On the way to the range or into the field, a careless grab is enough, and dust or fingerprints end up exactly where the eye will later be. The Vector Optics SCFC-M44 is a lightweight metal flip-up cap for the eyepiece of compatible Continental scopes. It slides on, aligns, and clamps with a screw.
Important before purchase: The “44” in the model name is not a reliable ordering size. Manufacturer and specialist dealers list different nominal sizes; therefore, the actual fit on the eyepiece decides.
Check fit carefully now
Our honest assessment
SCFC-M44 makes sense if you want a stable, permanently mounted protection for the eye
nside lens you want. Compared to a loose rubber cap, you don’t have to store anything separately; the cap stays attached to the scope via the hinge.
The downside: Aluminum doesn’t forgive incorrect measurements. The cap is neither universal accessory nor a lens cover. Vector Optics does not publish an official shock or waterproof rating or a tightening torque.
Fits well if …
you own a compatible Vector Optics Continental scope, have checked the eyepiece mount in advance, and prefer a metal cap that stays on the optic.
Fits less well if …
you want to protect the objective side, use a Taurus/VictOptics or third-party model, or want to “compensate” measurement deviations by tightening more.
What the cap practically delivers
Metal instead of loose snap-on cap
6061-T6 aluminum holds its shape and remains permanently mounted. This protects against dust, finger contact, and light touches – but does not replace padded transport or dedicated moisture protection.
Three defined positions
Vector Optics calls them closed, flip-up, and fully open. Before tightening, you can choose the hinge alignment so that the magnification ring, throw lever, and stop remain as free as possible.
22 grams net weight
The manufacturer states 22 g for the cap. Shopify lists 45 g as shipping weight; both are deliberately separated because packaging and shipping weight do not have to correspond to net weight.
Quick access
To use, the cap is opened, not removed. In practice, this is especially convenient if the optic is frequently taken out of the case or switched between transport and observation in the field.
The measurement question: 44, 48, or 45.5–46.5 mm?
Sources use three different figures for the same model. The German distributor states “44 mm.” The global manufacturer site describes the cap for Continental eyepieces with 48 mm diameter. Several optics dealers, however, name 45.5–46.5 mm as the actual clamping range.
Practically, the model number is therefore not a measurement. Measure the straight cylindrical mounting area outside – not the free lens, not the main tube diameter, and not the objective number in the scope’s name. For borderline sizes or different generations, the fit should be checked on the actual part.
For the Continental x8 2–16×44 ED Tactical, the manufacturer explicitly confirms SCFC-M44 as eyepiece cap. Also, for the Continental x6 2–12×50, the official product FAQ for the eyepiece side refers to SCFC-M44. A manufacturer response rejects the fit on the Taurus 4–24×50, however.
Installation: simple, but not careless
1. Unload and secure
Work on mounted optics only on fully unloaded, controlled firearms and in a safe working direction. Alternatively, work on the scope separately.
2. Clean and measure mount
Remove dust from lens and mount. Measure the outer diameter on the straight eyepiece housing and compare with model and manufacturer approval.
3. Slide on straight
Place the cap without tension. According to the manufacturer, it is slid on and clamped via the integrated screw – not screwed into a thread.
4. Align first, then fix
Test all cap positions and exclude contact with controls. Tighten only enough so the ring sits securely; no official torque is specified.
Instructor and user notes
Check function dry before first use: open and close the cap at the stop, with gloves and in the planned hinge position. A cap that hits the magnification lever costs more time at the wrong moment than a loose cap.
No lever load: The hinge is meant for opening. Do not lay the firearm or optic down
on the opened cap and do not slide it against firm foam inside the case.
After assembly and transport, check: Ensure a secure fit, free adjustment, and undamaged hinge. The cap does not change the point of impact but must not interfere with operation or eye relief.
Useful alternatives and additions
Other side, other cap
For the objective side, choose according to the specific objective model. For example, the SCFC-M28 is an objective cap and not a replacement for SCFC-M44.
Various Continental objectives
The SCFC-M objective cap selection is useful if you are looking for the front size matching the respective Continental model.
Add operation
The SCCON-TL adjustment lever can facilitate magnification changes. Before combining, check that the lever and opened cap operate without collision.
Plan transport correctly
The guide on transporting scopes pressure-free in a gun case explains why even a metal cap is not designed to withstand lateral case pressure.
Technical data with practical interpretation
Model SCFC-M44 – ocular flip-up cap, not SCFC-MO44 for a 44-mm objective.
Compatibility Continental ocular; officially 48 mm nominal, in specialist trade 45.5–46.5 mm clamping range. Check actual measurement.
Material 6061-T6 aluminum alloy – dimensionally stable but less tolerant to incorrect diameter than rubber.
Surface Matte black – unobtrusive on black optics, without guaranteed scratch resistance class.
Positions Closed, flip-up, and fully open; orientation selectable before tightening.
Weight 22 g net according to manufacturer; 45 g shipping weight unchanged in shop.
Attachment Slip on and clamp with screw; no published tightening torque.
Protection limit No specified IP, shock, or pressure protection class.
Scope of delivery
Included: one Vector Optics SCFC-M44 aluminum flip-up cap with clamping ring, hinge, and fastening screw.
Not guaranteed included: tools, objective cap, scope, spacer, or transport cover. The German distributor only mentions the cap; differing dealer information is therefore not adopted.
Care and safe use
Blow off dust first or loosen with a suitable optics brush before wiping the lens or inside of the cover. Do not use aggressive solvents on coating, hinge, or optics. Let dry after opening when wet. Close the lid during transport and bed the optics so that neither hinge nor cap is stressed laterally.
FAQ
Is SCFC-M44 an objective cap for 44-mm scopes? No. This product is intended for the ocular side. The appropriate front cap must be chosen for the objective.
Does it fit securely on every Continental scope? The manufacturer broadly approves for Continental oculars, explicitly confirms individual models, and states nominal 48 mm. Since dealers mention 45.5–46.5 mm as clamping size and generations may vary, we recommend measuring the actual size before purchase.
Does it fit the Continental 2–16×44? Yes, this combination is explicitly confirmed in the manufacturer Q&A. The “44” on the scope describes the objective, not the ocular mount.
Does the cap fit Taurus or VictOptics? Not generally. The manufacturer explicitly denies fit for Taurus 4–24×50. For other series, no guarantee without exact approval or verified measurements.
How tight should the screw be? Vector Optics does not publish a torque. The cap should sit securely and without stress. If only strong tightening creates hold, first check size, fit, and model.
Does the cap fully protect during transport? It protects the ocular lens from direct contact and dirt. Against pressure, hard shocks, or lateral
The optics still need a suitable, pressure-free padding for the lever forces.
Black Raptor – honest advice
Small accessories, clear interface
We advise from both instructor and user perspectives: don’t guess by model number, but check the mount, install cleanly, and define limits. This creates gear that works on the range and in the field – backed by experience, honest exchange, and our community.
