Flat EDC · Duty · Low-Light
NEXTORCH TA70: lots of light, without the round flashlight roll
Control in the dark parking lot, a quick glance into the equipment room, or searching at the forest edge: The TA70 lies flat on the body, can be physically locked, and releases a strong momentary burst of light in TAC mode.
The key point: 3,500 lumens here are a short-term tactical reserve – not a permanent working light. For longer tasks, the regulated DUTY levels and a realistic look at the step-down count.
TA70 honest assessment
Our honest assessment
The TA70 is an unusually flat duty and EDC light with an integrated battery. This makes it pleasantly close to the body and prevents the typical rolling away of a round flashlight. The mechanical selector for LOCK, DUTY, and TAC clearly separates transport, stepped everyday use, and direct tactical access.
The strength lies not only in the peak number but in the process: pull, feel the mode, briefly brighten, identify, and secure again. The downside is just as clear: The 1,400-mAh battery is fixed, the maximum burst is momentary, and high output is reduced due to heat and battery protection.
Works well if …
… you want a flat light for EDC, security, rescue,
Revier or search tasks in the near to mid-range.
… you prefer a real transport lock and clearly separated control logic over as many special modes as possible.
… an integrated USB-C battery makes sense for your charging and carrying concept.
Rather not suitable if …
… you need to change batteries in the field or require maximum runtime without charging breaks.
… you expect a constant 3,500 lumens, need red light, or are looking for a focused searchlight.
… you want a light for fixed weapon mounting: The TA70 is a handheld light.
Operation and features – what they practically change
LOCK / DUTY / TAC
LOCK prevents accidental activation in your backpack or gear. DUTY provides 28, 300, and 1,300 lumens; TAC gives momentary light with 3,500 lumens and strobe access. If you switch between everyday use and missions, this offers a clear switching logic.
Flat 18.7 mm housing
The light is less bulky than many round-body models and lies stable on a surface. Clip and guide ring support repeatable access – the exact carrying position still needs to be tested with your own gear.
Three LEDs, wide usable light
The beam pattern is especially suitable for quickly capturing larger areas. The manufacturer’s range of up to 220 m is an ANSI measurement; safe detection and identification in practice are significantly less and depend on weather, contrast, and target size.
USB-C behind the switch rocker
The switch rocker also serves as a cover for the charging port. This keeps the shape compact. The cover must be fully closed to protect against moisture and dirt; charging should only be done dry and under supervision.
Performance: Manufacturer value and independent measurement
NEXTORCH states 3,500 lumens in TAC burst, 1,300 lumens in High, 300 lumens in Medium, and 28 lumens in Low. In an independent 1Lumen test, 3,385 lumens were measured at switch-on and 2,489 lumens after 30 seconds. High initially was around 1,225 lumens and dropped after a few minutes to about 375 lumens; Medium remained largely stable around 292 lumens.
Practical interpretation: Burst and High are strong for short information gathering. For longer inspections, Medium is usually the more predictable level. The step-down is not a defect but part of heat and energy management – it just needs to be considered in mission planning.
Instructor and user tips
Train dry access
Practice LOCK → DUTY or LOCK → TAC without looking. Check the grip path sitting down, with a jacket, and with gloves. The independent test describes ring operation with thick gloves as less comfortable.
Use momentary light consciously
TAC is designed for short light pulses. Continuous illumination reveals position, blinds rear surfaces, and consumes reserves. First check direction and surroundings, then selectively brighten.
DUTY starts in Low
The TA70 starts in the DUTY sequence at a low level. This preserves dark adaptation but is not a classic memory operation. If you expect more light immediately, you should automate the click sequence beforehand.
Interpret field evaluation
An NTOA field evaluation with operational personnel gave 4.68 out of 5 points and included falls, cold, submersion, and daily use. This is a reliable practical experience but does not replace your own equipment and access test.
Which alternative fits better?
TA70 or TA21?
The NEXTORCH TA21 is the obvious alternative if red light and a more compact dual-light logic are more important. The TA70 scores with a flat body and higher short-term white light reserve.
TA70 or TA30D MAX?
The NEXTORCH TA30D MAX is better suited if classic round-body ergonomics and a stronger searchlight character have priority. The T
A70 is designed to be worn close to the body and clearly aimed at flat EDC.
More operation and size comparison is offered by the Black-Raptor guide to the NEXTORCH TA series. You can find more suitable models in the NEXTORCH collection as well as in Lamps for Camp and Tour and Light & Emergency Lighting.
Technical data with practical interpretation
Light levels TAC 3,500 lm; DUTY 28 / 300 / 1,300 lm. The maximum value is a short-term momentary burst.
Range Up to 220 m in TAC burst; 135 / 65 / 20 m in the DUTY levels according to the manufacturer. Identification distance is lower.
Runtime Manufacturer specification: High 2 h, Medium 3 h, Low 30 h. The values include regulated power reductions.
Battery and charging Built-in Li-Ion battery with 1,400 mAh, USB-C. Slim design, but no quick battery change in the field.
Dimensions and weight 121 × 35 × 18.7 mm; 124 g including battery according to NEXTORCH. Independent test measured 126 g.
Durability IP67 and drop height up to 2 m according to the manufacturer. After hard impacts, still check housing, switch, lens, and charging cover.
Intensity Up to 12,100 cd in TAC burst; 4,600 / 1,080 / 100 cd in DUTY. The beam pattern remains rather all-round than extremely focused.

Safety, care and training
Heat and eyes
High light levels generate heat. Do not cover the light exit, do not leave the lamp switched on unattended, and never shine directly into eyes. Strobe can disorient and is not a play mode.
Battery and USB-C
Charge only when dry, keep cable and connector clean, and do not use if swollen, unusually warm, or housing damaged. Do not open or replace the integrated battery yourself.
Carry check
Regularly check clip and ring for secure fit. Set to LOCK before transport. After a fall, strong impact, or submersion, check function and sealing surfaces.
Low-light principle
One lamp does not make safe low-light use. Target identification, muzzle discipline with simultaneous weapon handling, and legal framework must be trained separately and professionally.
FAQ about the NEXTORCH TA70
Are 3,500 lumens permanently available? No. The 3,500 lumens belong to the momentary TAC burst. Even High reduces power thermally. For longer use, Medium is the more predictable level.
Can the battery be replaced? No. The 1,400 mAh battery is fixed built-in. This enables the slim form but limits field reserve and makes battery condition a long-term lifespan factor.
Does the TA70 have mode memory? In DUTY mode it starts on Low and cycles through. If you expect a freely selectable start level or classic memory function, you should consider the operating logic before purchase.
Is it suitable as a searchlight? For short to medium search and control tasks, yes. For long distances or permanently high power, a larger, more focused searchlight with replaceable battery is usually more sensible.
Is it a weapon light? No. The TA70 is designed as a handheld lamp. Use, mounting, and training must not be equated with a weapon light tested for that purpose.
How long does it charge? NEXTORCH states about 2.5 hours; in independent tests it was about 2 hours 10 minutes. Charger, cable, temperature, and remaining charge affect the duration.
Black Raptor · honestly assessed
The TA70 is convincing when its slim form and clear switching logic fit your routine. It is neither a 3,500-lumen continuous burner nor a replacement for train
ing – but a well-thought-out handheld flashlight for users who consider access, transport, and realistic performance levels together.
We advise from both instructor and user perspectives: with reliable sources, openly stated limitations, and the claim that equipment in the community not only impresses but works in real scenarios.
