This is the sporting version of the 7.62x51 mm NATO. It was introduced by Winchester in 1952 – just one year after the new NATO cartridge. Like most other military cartridges, it was expected to quickly become popular for hunting, and Winchester wisely decided to make a civilian version bearing their name. The purpose of the new military design was to create a more compact cartridge with a faster cycle rate than the .30-06, allowing a soldier to carry more cartridges. It also has excellent accuracy potential and is preferred by many sport shooters. Since the .308 Winchester fits in short bolt-action rifles and delivers almost the same energy as the .30-06 with medium-weight bullets, it has become one of the most popular cartridges in the world.
