

The 8 mm Mauser was adopted in 1888 by the German army and in the following years by a number of countries such as Czechoslovakia, Poland, and China. The designation "Mauser" is actually a misnomer, as the cartridge was developed by a German military commission at the Spandau arsenal for a predecessor of the famous Mauser rifle introduced in 1898. The "J" in the name stands for "Infantry." The designation "J" is based on a mistake related to the earlier use of Gothic letters in Germany and has no significance for the bullet size. But in 1905, the German army switched from round 226-grain bullets to a pointed 154-grain boat-tail bullet, and at the same time, the bullet diameter was changed from .318" to the current standard of .323".
