Smith & Wesson Chiefs Special Blank Firing Revolver 9mm R.K. nickel-platedThe sharp Smith & Wesson Chiefs Special became better known under the name Model 36, as the nickname was only used between 1950 and 1957. After World War II, when arms production was halted, S&W decided to produce a compact revolver in .38 Special caliber. However, since the available frame was not strong enough for this load, a new one was quickly designed. It was named J-Frame. Due to its external dimensions, the capacity of the revolver was reduced to 5 rounds. Once released, it began a long career that is still ongoing. In Japan, Malaysia, and Norway, it became the weapon of choice for plainclothes police officers. In the USA itself, it was the main weapon for detectives at the NYPD (New York Police Department) and is still sometimes used as a backup weapon when the primary service pistol runs out of ammunition. To build on this success, Umarex decided to produce the blank firing variant in 9mm R.K. of the S&W Chiefs Special. This features a single/double action trigger, a central ejector, and a swing-out cylinder.Smith & Wesson Chiefs Special TestThe Smith & Wesson Chiefs Special is really very handy. That was the first thought when we had this revolver for testing. Female shooters will not only appreciate the dimensions but also the low weight. But aside from that, the small blank firing revolver also looks very good. On the table, one could easily confuse it with its sharp twin. The manufacturer's emblem is located in the same places as on the original. The black plastic grip panels also harmonize perfectly with the nickel-plated finish. Since the gas revolver can be fired in two modes, we tried both. The double action mode requires a bit more finger strength, but it should be noted that the trigger does not scratch. In single action mode, this is significantly reduced, and there is even a certain pressure point. To load the signal revolver, the cylinder must be unlocked via a button and then swung out to the side. Now all chambers are accessible. For quick reloading, one can dispose of the empty casings using the central ejector. In our test, this worked flawlessly. Also, in the final shooting test, no weaknesses were revealed. Each cartridge ignited reliably and was ejected without force.The Smith & Wesson Chiefs Special is a well-rounded gas/signal revolver. It looks authentic and showed no weaknesses in the test.
