The development of the pistol began in 1994. In 1996, it reached market readiness. The most striking feature is the absence of a hammer; the P99 instead has an internal striker. The cocking status of the striker can be recognized and felt by a rear red signal pin. The loading status of the P99 is recognizable at the extractor.

In early 2023, Carl Walther announced that the production of the Walther P99 would be discontinued after 26 years.
