The .357 SIG has a very high muzzle velocity for a handgun cartridge, which gives the projectile a particularly stable ballistic trajectory and thus results in a relatively high range. This is roughly achieved by modifying a .40 S&W caliber case into a bottleneck case to be able to use a ".357" projectile (9 mm projectile). This significantly increases range and penetration power.

In addition to sports shooting, it is also a good caliber for a follow-up shot, as one can rely on lightweight polymer pistols for more comfortable carrying instead of heavy Magnum revolvers. It is used in semi-automatic pistols, e.g., from GLOCK (G31).
