The Hornady Critical Duty is a pistol cartridge designed for the finishing shot, favoring deep penetration and reliable expansion under all conditions. Designed for full-size pistols, this is not a cartridge for compact or subcompact firearms. It was developed to meet the stringent FBI requirements, making it excellent for the finishing shot on tough and hard-to-kill game, especially wild boar.

The FlexLock bullet features the patented FlexTip bullet tip, which prevents clogging of the hollow point. This allows the bullet to achieve its full effect even when passing through dense animal hair or thick hide. The jacket and core are securely bonded thanks to InterLock, providing the bullet with excellent stability and preventing it from disintegrating even under tough conditions, achieving high penetration depth and ensuring it penetrates even when hitting a boar's skull head-on. This is also achieved through a lead core with a high antimony content, which ensures a very hard alloy.

The casing is nickel-plated, which not only increases the corrosion resistance of the casing—important for a cartridge that is loaded in the firearm under all weather conditions but rarely fired—but also enhances visibility under poor lighting conditions, which is advantageous when performing a load check before entering thick brush. Additionally, the casing is crimped, ensuring that the bullet does not loosen during repeated loading and unloading and always sits securely.
Finally, the powder is a special formulation for low muzzle flash, ensuring that visibility is not impaired by the muzzle fire even in low light conditions.
