The history of Winchester dates back to 1848. Clothing manufacturer Oliver Winchester was one of the main shareholders of Smith & Wesson, or rather, at that time involved with Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. After moderate success of the volcanic rifle, S&W withdrew, and with Benjamin Henry, new momentum came to the newly founded New Haven Arms Company. The so-called Henry rifle brought the breakthrough. After the separation from Henry, the success story of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company began. Winchester had re-modified and improved the basic design of the Henry rifle "Model 1866" to bring the first Winchester rifle to market. Further innovative developments continuously secured growing market shares. Especially as a manufacturer of repeating firearms, Winchester became world-famous. The Winchester brand is now owned by Olin Corporation, and the name is used under license by two subsidiaries of the Herstal Group.
