WEATHERBY Vanguard OBSIDIAN .308 Winchester (20" Heavy Barrel 1/2"x28)

The Weatherby Vanguard OBSIDIAN features a polymer stock in Monte Carlo style and a blued finish on the barrel and action. The 20-inch bull barrel offers excellent vibration and shooting behavior and can be used for both hunting and sport. The Weatherby Vanguard models have been manufactured by Howa in Japan since 1970 and are based on the well-known Howa 1500, with final assembly taking place at Weatherby in Wyoming. All Vanguards come with a 3-position safety and an adjustable two-stage trigger.

The Vanguard Obsidian offers a classic bluing on the barrel and action sleeve, bolt, and chamber stem; the polymer stock is kept in simple black and features a Monte Carlo cheek piece and an enlarged pistol grip. A versatile weapon for everyday hunting or as an affordable base for a personal project.

Why is this weapon in our Young Hunter program?
The Howa M1500 / Weatherby Vanguard is a proven platform of Japanese quality. Due to its wide distribution and long production history, the accessory market is also well-equipped. The three-position safety with chamber lock provides a new shooter with the safety and reliability they need. The trigger is well-suited for hunting purposes and can be adjusted by the shooter - however, this is not recommended for beginners. The Howa barrels "eat anything"; they are not very sensitive to ammunition and work with many loadings - especially as a young hunter, it is important to trust your barrel and not have a diva that requires a special diet.
We recommend the caliber .308 Winchester for young hunters - an all-rounder with a huge selection of ammunition. 6.5 Creedmoor is based on the same case but uses a longer and lighter bullet - designed for long distances, it is not necessarily recommended for beginners, but an experienced shooter can certainly take advantage of the high range.
