Product Description

For sale is an absolute legend of American revolver manufacturing: A Smith & Wesson Model 17-4 (also known as .22 Target Masterpiece) in the precise caliber .22 l.r. Built on the world-famous, medium-sized K-frame from S&W, the Model 17 is still considered one of the most precise, best-balanced, and durable rimfire revolvers of all time among sports shooters and collectors worldwide.

This beautiful specimen with the serial number 26K7490 dates back to 1979 (civil proof Munich 1979) and represents the old, uncompromising manufacturing quality of the traditional Smith & Wesson era before the major rationalization measures of the following decades.
History and Classification

The history of this model dates back to 1947 when S&W introduced the high-end .22 K-22 Target Masterpiece, which was later renamed "Model 17" in 1957 as part of the new numbering system. The fourth evolutionary stage offered here (17-4) was manufactured from 1977 to 1988. It is considered particularly desirable among connoisseurs as it represents the absolute peak design before the modernization of the production lines. The model was primarily developed as a no-compromise sporting weapon for precision shooting and shares the exact frame weight and handling with its large caliber siblings like the famous Model 19 (.357 Magnum), allowing for cost-effective and realistic training.
Collector and Shooter Highlights

"Pinned & Recessed": This revolver features the classic, traditional characteristics that make S&W firearms so valuable today. The barrel is pinned firmly in the frame (pinned barrel) and the cylinder chambers are deeply recessed (recessed cylinders), so the cartridge bases are completely flush with the back of the cylinder. These elaborate construction features were discontinued in the early 1980s (around 1982) for cost reasons. Examples made before this change are sought-after collector's items with guaranteed value stability.
Mechanical Best Condition: The bore is mirror-like, the lands and grooves are sharp and undamaged. The timing of the cylinder is perfect, it locks in crisply and without play. The cylinder gap is minimal, ensuring optimal energy yield and excellent precision.
Condition 2+ (Excellent): The revolver is in an excellent, extremely well-maintained, and original overall condition. The original deep blue S&W mirror finish shines fantastically and shows hardly any significant signs of use. Only the technically unavoidable, hair-thin drag line on the cylinder (Turn Line) is visible – a sign that the weapon has always been well cared for.

Equipment

Adjustable S&W micrometer sight (rear sight adjustable in height and windage with fine clicks, fixed target front sight)
Classic K-frame with excellent balance and handling
High-quality, original S&W wooden grip panels with checkering and inlaid S&W medallions

Conclusion

Whether for the demanding sport discipline (such as DSB, BDS, etc.) or as a value-stable collector's item in the safe – a Smith & Wesson Model 17-4 in this quality of workmanship, full steel construction, and this outstanding condition is simply no longer manufactured today.
