The Smith & Wesson Model 686 is a double-action revolver with six or seven shots, manufactured by Smith & Wesson and designed for the .357 Magnum cartridge. It can chamber and fire .38 Spec. since the .357 Magnum was developed from the .38 Spec. The Magnum case is slightly longer to prevent such cartridges from being fired in handguns that were designed for .38 Special.
Smith & Wesson introduced the Model 686 in 1981. It is the stainless steel version of the 586, which was made from blued steel. It was designed for .357 Magnum and .38 S & W Special + P calibers.
The Model 686 is based on the K / L (Medium) revolver frame from S & W. In the 1980s, Smith & Wesson developed the K / L frame series of .357 Magnums: Model 581, Model 586, Model 681, and Model 686. Models 581 and 681 have fixed sights, while Models 586 and 686 use adjustable sights.
