Updated and expanded new edition 2023
In this brochure, the umbrella organization of hunters explains the causes of wildlife damage, its prevention, and the habitat requirements of ungulates in forest environments. Based on wildlife biological research findings, the DJV illustrates why one-dimensional approaches are not a solution to the wildlife damage problem: Increased hunting pressure, both temporally and spatially, would rather provoke wildlife damage and exacerbate the conflict. Nine practical examples from across Germany demonstrate how forest and wildlife can be harmonized regionally.
For the necessary restructuring of forests, forestry and hunting measures should be adapted to local conditions and sensibly combined. To protect young trees, for instance, regeneration areas should be hunted more intensively - although wildlife reduction is not the sole solution. Additional forestry measures may be necessary to protect against competing plants such as blackberry and bracken or when rare mixed tree species are introduced. Furthermore, wildlife refuge zones help, which should not be used seasonally by recreation seekers.
Through wildlife ecological spatial planning involving all stakeholders, local concepts should be developed that create a compromise between human usage claims and the legitimate needs of wildlife. The 56-page brochure in A4 format also explains current funding programs that help to reconcile forestry and wildlife biological aspects. However, the DJV sees a need for improvement in the existing state funding measures in forestry.
In the practical section, nine examples show that hunting and forestry objectives do not have to be an insurmountable contradiction. The concepts from six federal states illustrate how successful paths for forest and wildlife can be taken under various forestry conditions and wildlife populations.
