The SIG Sauer P226 is a well-known semi-automatic pistol that was originally developed in Germany and is now used worldwide by military, police, and civilian users. The P226 was developed in the 1980s by the company SIG Sauer. It is structurally based on the older P220 but has been adapted for higher magazine capacity and military requirements. The development has historical roots in Germany/Switzerland (SIG in Neuhausen, later SIG Sauer GmbH in Eckernförde). Its areas of use include police and military units worldwide, special forces such as the US Navy Seals in certain variants, as well as sport shooters and civilian users. The SIG Sauer received its proof in Kiel in 1989.
