The Sauer 505 ErgoMax Black Highland rifle with its ergonomic polymer stock – here in the left-handed version – meets all functional and aesthetic demands of a contemporary hunting rifle.
After ten years, the gunsmiths at J.P. Sauer & Sohn have launched the successor to their successful model Sauer 404. The Sauer 505 bolt-action rifle – here for hunters who shoot left-handed – features a solid steel housing that weighs only 732 g due to its optimal machining, an ergonomically shaped stock, and a cold-hammered barrel, creating a hunting rifle that is unparalleled.
DLC Coating
With the Highland package, the surfaces of the barrel and housing are refined with a DLC coating. DLC stands for “Diamond like Carbon.” This type of coating is very environmentally friendly and biocompatible compared to galvanic coatings. Through a thin-film coating process, the coated components become particularly resistant and very smooth.
The Stock
Its name says it all: maximum ergonomics. The length of the robust, elegantly designed two-part Ergo-Max polymer buttstock in the left-handed version with a straight back – which is also compatible with the Sauer 404 – is 36.5 cm. The grip surfaces feature elastomer inserts that remain slip-resistant even in rain or when wearing gloves. The pistol grip feels pleasantly in the shooting hand, which remains relaxed at all times. Polymer is a very durable plastic that withstands adverse environmental conditions. Moreover, the material is lightweight, providing a solid all-round hunting rifle.
The System: Steel Housing and Steel Bolt
The system of the Sauer 505 consists of a solid steel housing and a one-piece bolt, also made of steel. This results in low friction, leading to a smooth chambering and quiet cycling. The ball of the chamber handle is subtly knurled.
The Manual Safety
The manual safety of the Sauer 505 rifle has undergone further development, both in terms of usability and safety. An extension of the cocking path requires even less effort. With a light thumb pressure, you can cock your rifle just before the shot, and just as easily release it afterward to unload.
The Trigger
The Sauer 505 rifle features a Quattro trigger with four weight settings, ensuring a crisp break and the exact trigger weight you desire. The four weight settings are 350 g, 750 g, 1,000 g, and 1,250 g. The adjustment is made with the Sauer universal key when the fore-end is uncocked. With a trigger that is always dry and free of creep, the risk of a shot going awry due to a glitch is virtually eliminated.
The Barrel
The cold-hammered barrel of the Sauer 505 rifle is fluted in the Highland version. This offers the advantage that the increased surface area of the barrel due to the fluting dissipates heat more quickly, preventing disturbing mirage even during rapid fire. Another advantage of fluting is weight reduction. The barrel has no sights, and its length corresponds to the choice of caliber.
The Magazine
The magazine is made of polymer, making it lighter. The magazines are designed for the chosen calibers and hold either 2, 3, or 5 cartridges, depending on the version. An unintentional release of the magazine button is prevented by the integrated magazine safety MagLock.
