The P22 is a recoil-operated pistol with an unlocked mass lock. It operates on the DA/SA principle. The single-stack magazine releases the trigger bar when inserted. The weapon can only be decocked by pulling the trigger, meaning that decocking via the safety lever, as with many other weapons, e.g., the HK P8, is not possible. Since all controls, except for the slide stop lever, are available on both sides, the P22 is suitable for both right- and left-handed users.

The P22 is mostly made of plastics, while the slide and important components are made of zinc die-cast. The barrel is made of steel and is two-part. The barrel liner contains the rifling. A thread is standardly cut at the muzzle, allowing for the attachment of suppressors.

With interchangeable backstraps, the weapon can be individually adjusted.
