When sharpening tool steels, the burr created during grinding is removed and the cutting edge is polished. During this process, the following happens on the Belgian Whetstone, which is moistened with water: When the blade of the tool rubs over the evenly fine-grained surface of the stone, the softer components of the sedimentary rock, such as ashes, clays, and micas, are first worn away, and the embedded garnets protrude slightly. Then they also detach from the parent rock (this is referred to as garnet breakout) and form a thin slurry with the water, the grinding paste. During the uniform grinding motion, the rounded edges of the garnet slightly penetrate the steel and take fine shavings from the metal. However, the hardness of the garnet causes a very sharp abrasion, but the round shape of the granules does not create cracks, but rather a fine polish. This combination of speed and fineness is unique worldwide. It allows for a cutting sharpness that can, for example, cleanly cut through wood fibers.
