ACME's whistles are frequency standardized, thus guaranteeing an identical tone for whistles with the same number. The whistles are available in 210.5 and 211.5. 210.5 has a higher (brighter) tone. As a result, the sound does not carry as far in windy weather. It is best suited for spaniels that work closely with the handler, where the distances are not so great. 211.5 has a deeper (darker) tone. This allows the sound to carry further in windy weather. This is best suited for retrievers, as they can work at distances of several hundred meters in extreme cases. Often, spaniels and retrievers are used in the same hunts, and it is important that the whistles do not disturb the other dogs. This may be a reason why the breeds "stick" to a certain type of whistle. The whistles are, of course, suitable for all types of dogs.
