The FN 509® Tactical, an extension of the FN 509 family, is based on the pistol that FN presented to the U.S. Army for testing as part of its modular pistol program, but includes significant design improvements implemented in the FN 509.

The pistol is equipped with the low-profile FN interface for optics (U.S. Patent No. 10/352,654), allowing the slide to accommodate more than ten commercially available mini red dot sights (MRD) that are aligned with the sights and enable aiming with a suppressor. Additionally, it allows for adaptation to future optic versions without the need for direct milling of the slide. The slide cover, which is attached when no optic is present, is reinforced to protect the alignment of the sights in the event of a drop or impact and serves as a structured ramp for one-handed racking by pressing the slide against a belt loop, a pocket, or a boot.

A 114 mm barrel made of cold-hammered stainless steel with a recessed muzzle for increased precision, a ½” x 28 thread to accommodate most commercially available 9 mm suppressors, and a thread protector ring with an integrated O-ring that prevents loosening during use complete the upper part of the weapon. Finally, the 24-round magazines, which are nearly identical in length to the length of the pistol grip, maximize ammunition capacity without compromising carry comfort.
