The thermal imaging attachment Viper by Nitehog enters its second generation: Viper Gen 2 Tac impresses with its innovative AI technologies.Nitehog has focused on innovative technologies in its update of the Viper thermal imaging attachments – available in 2 versions as and Tac – such as the AI-SRF algorithm for precise target distance determination and hot target tracking. The compact design of the predecessor models has largely been retained, which is particularly beneficial when space for mounting is limited. The field of view has also significantly increased to 17.6 m at 100 m. In the Tactical version, the housing is in Flat Dark Earth (FDE), with the control elements highlighted in black, and the inscription "Viper Tac" is in white.
Sensor and Display
The heart of the Viper Gen 2 Tac device is its highly sensitive VOx sensor with a resolution of 640×512 px @ 12 μm and a NETD value of ≤15 mK. It has a detection range of 1,750 m and can detect even the smallest thermal differences. The 35 mm lens with a 1.1 aperture is extremely light-sensitive, and the 0.39‘‘ OLED display with a resolution of 1024x768 px processes data with AI support into high-quality images, with pixel errors repaired by the self-learning algorithm. There are 7 color palettes available:
Black hot: Warmer objects appear black.White hot: Warmer objects appear white.Red hot: The image is red-black to minimize blue light emission from the display and protect the eyes.Isotherm: Objects above the set threshold temperature are colored in various shades of red. Increasing the threshold ignores the coloring of cooler objects.Auto Isotherm: In this mode, a marked object is set as the object with the lowest temperature in the scene. Other objects with higher temperatures are highlighted in yellow-red.Ironbow and Rainbow increase the chances of detecting and identifying objects.
The Device
The Viper Gen 2 Tac thermal imaging device can be mounted on daytime optics using a QR mount (Quick Release / Direct Mount) or with an FTS (Flip-to-Side Adapter). Its housing is made of a magnesium alloy. With a precision of 0.96 MOA, the attachment ensures precise target acquisition. It can be used after mounting without zeroing. Its recoil resistance is up to 7,000 J. Operation is intuitive via the two menu buttons and a selection button on the top of the device. The elements are designed to be operable even with gloves. The device is turned on with a lever on the side with the options ON, S (Standby), and OFF. With a 18650 Li-Ion battery, the runtime is around 6 hours depending on the features used. The battery is easy to replace, even in complete darkness.
Helpful Technologies
Nitehog uses state-of-the-art technologies to enhance the performance of the Viper Gen 2 Tac and make its use even more comfortable. The hot target tracking function, for example, allows recognized objects in the field of view to be automatically identified and marked for quick and effective tracking. The target distance can also be determined via AI with the SRF algorithm. An alignment function allows for precise adjustment of the optical axis of the riflescope and attachment. Additionally, the Viper Gen 2 Tac automatically adapts to different environments and stores up to three profiles of different daytime optics.
Documentation and Communication
The use of the attachment can be documented with photo snapshots and videos. The internal memory has a capacity of 64 GB, and the Viper Gen 2 Tac also communicates via WiFi with the Nitevision app, available for iOS and Android. Live streams can also be shared through this app. Software updates for the device are also available this way. The recoil-activated automatic video recording of 10 seconds before and 10 seconds after the shot ensures that all shots are recorded for subsequent evaluation.
