While we greatly appreciate the tradition of brass frames that began with B.T. Henry's rifle in 1860, we also understand that today's hunters may prefer a slightly lighter option for use in mountainous terrain. The Big Boy Steel Side Gate preserves the classic character of the brass frame models in the Big Boy series but offers modern upgrades for the discerning hunter – and weighs about 0.76 kg (1.68 lbs) less than its brass counterpart. These Side Gate models are available in .357 Mag/.38 Special, .44 Mag/.44 Special, and .45 Colt calibers. They are offered with either a 20-inch round barrel and standard lever or in a more compact version with a 16.5-inch round barrel and a large-loop lever – ideal for use with gloves in cold weather and with an added style factor. Both models feature fine checkering on the forend and a straight stock made of American walnut, an adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight with brass bead, an automatic safety with transfer bar in the hammer, as well as a side loading gate combined with a removable tube magazine. The rifles hold ten rounds, while the carbines can accommodate seven rounds.
Combined with a reliable revolver in the same caliber, this firearm allows for the cowboy logistics principle, meaning less ammunition weight over long distances. Thanks to its compact design, it fits perfectly in saddle bags and produces less noise for horses with its softer shooting characteristics of pistol calibers. The carbine is as practical a companion in dense underbrush as it is in off-road vehicles and on hunting trips with the truck. Although visually traditional, the Big Boy pistol carbines are drilled and tapped for scopes, allowing for quick target acquisition with red dot sights as well as greater range with magnifying optics. The longer barrels provide a significant velocity increase with magnum pistol cartridges, nearly achieving the performance of a classic rifle. At the same time, the tube magazine offers greater capacity, while the shorter cartridge cases lead to shorter, faster lever movements.
